Peloponnese is the name of the peninsula south of the isthmus of Corinth
that makes up the southern half of Greece (area 3).
Peloponnese owes its name to the mythological hero Pelops,
a legendary king of the city of Mycenæ (see
entry on that city for his story).
In historical times, Peloponnese was mostly populated by Dorians
under the leadership of Sparta.
